Please describe the problem.

A very simple scenario where a git annex is cloned via git:// protocol results in the cloned repo being not functional.

Specifically, in a repo that had been cloned via git:// protocol, I encounter a 'not available' error when attempting git annex get

shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch/bar$ git annex get motd
get motd (not available)
Try making some of these repositories available:
        f75d1e03-3b95-45be-9d30-ca8996e0b69a -- foo
failed
git-annex: get: 1 failed

What steps will reproduce the problem?

The first step is to run git daemon for the git:// protocol:

shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch$ git daemon --export-all --enable=receive-pack --base-path=. &
[1] 10519

Now make a reference git annex repo:

shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch$ git init foo
Initialized empty Git repository in /home/shaddy/tmp/gitresearch/foo/.git/
shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch$ cd foo
shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch/foo$ git annex init foo
init foo ok
(recording state in git...)
shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch/foo$ cp /etc/motd .
shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch/foo$ git annex add motd
add motd ok
(recording state in git...)
shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch/foo$ git commit -m foo
[master (root-commit) 16dbab7] foo
 1 file changed, 1 insertion(+)
 create mode 120000 motd

Now create a clone via git://:

shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch/foo$ cd ..
shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch$ git clone git://localhost/foo bar
Cloning into 'bar'...

        f75d1e03-3b95-45be-9d30-ca8996e0b69a -- foo
failed
git-annex: get: 1 failed

Now the simple attempt to get the motd file fails:

shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch/bar$ git annex get motd
get motd (not available)
Try making some of these repositories available:
        f75d1e03-3b95-45be-9d30-ca8996e0b69a -- foo

git-annex: get: 1 failed

The confirmation that using local remotes in this simple way works file:

shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch/bar$ cd ..
shaddy@jazz-deb:~/tmp/gitresearch$ git clone foo xyz
Cloning into 'xyz'...
done.

Have you had any luck using git-annex before? (Sometimes we get tired of reading bug reports all day and a lil' positive end note does wonders)

Well... it did work for git's local protocol...

done, this was not really a bug, but I have added a warning message --Joey
