The git-annex.linux directory from the bundle does include a git, so if you
put that directory in PATH first, it will avoid the problem.

This should be a fairly transient problem, since the git-annex bundle is
built with the version of git from debian unstable. Once the new git
version gets released, it should fairly quickly get in there and the
incompatability will stop being a problem.

uff... ran into similar problem and since error is not really suggesting a reason for such odd behavior needed to search it up. In my case it was git-annex
10.20220624-1~ndall+1
which comes with
git

2.30.2
and system-wide I have
2.35.1
. Need to remember such a wisdom by heart unless may be the standalone build could somehow alert/complain into my face

@yarik you're building git-annex standalone with the git from Debian stable
right? If you updated it to a newer git 2.34 from backports,
you would not have this problem.

Of the standalone builds of git-annex that I made, I think only the
i386ancient one has an old enough git to have this problem.
And probably people using that one will not have a recent version of
git in the system and so won't be affected.
