First of all: Thank you VERY much for git-annex
, it's awesome.
I am running into a weird problem where git-annex init
complains that Git refuses to operate in this repository
(in turn because --local can only be used inside a git repository
) in a setup with separated --git-dir
and --work-tree
(a pretty usual scenario for managing one's dotfiles with a hidden bare git repository checked out to $HOME
):
Environment
I am running Manjaro/Arch Linux. For reproducibility, here is a Docker setup:
FROM archlinux
RUN pacman -Syu --noconfirm git-annex
sudo docker build -t archlinux-with-git-annex .
git-annex
works in a normal setup
sudo docker run --rm archlinux-with-git-annex sh -xc 'git config --global init.defaultBranch main;mkdir repo;cd repo;git init;git config user.email me@example.com;git config user.name Me;git annex init'
+ git config --global init.defaultBranch main
+ mkdir repo
+ cd repo
+ git init
Initialized empty Git repository in /repo/.git/
+ git config user.email me@example.com
+ git config user.name Me
+ git annex init
init ok
(recording state in git...)
git-annex init
fails when separating --git-dir
and --work-tree
sudo docker run --rm archlinux-with-git-annex sh -xc '
cd
git annex version
git config --global init.defaultBranch main
function mygit (){ git --git-dir="$HOME/.dotfiles" --work-tree="$HOME" $@; }
mygit init
mygit annex init
git config --global --add safe.directory $HOME
GIT_TRACE=1 mygit annex init --debug
'
+ cd
+ git annex version

is obviously not the problem here. Also not the safe.directory
thing. Setting it to *
also doesn't help.
I wonder why git
complains that --local can only be used inside a git repository
. Sounds like git-annex
executes git
in the wrong place when specifying --git-dir
and/or --work-tree
or it doesn't propagate it correctly.
Any ideas?
Simpler test case:
Anything like this is clearly a bug. And this forum is not the place to file bug reports. Doing so risks it being forgotten about because who is going to go back and check old forum threads to see if they were a bug that didn't get fixed?
Here, I opened a bug report: ?em>--work-tree
